Depression is a widespread mental health condition that affects approximately 9% of Canadians each year (Van Ameringen et al., 2008). For military veterans, however, the numbers are even higher. Many veterans experience elevated rates of depression and anxiety as a result of traumatic experiences during service (Veterans Affairs Canada, 2019). Despite a range of available treatments, there is no single effective approach, many individuals require multiple strategies to manage their symptoms and improve quality of life.
The Role of Medical Cannabis in Mental Health Care
Medical cannabis has emerged as a promising therapeutic option for individuals living with depression and anxiety. It is increasingly being explored as a complementary treatment for managing chronic symptoms such as sleep disturbances, intrusive thoughts, irritability, and persistent pain, all of which commonly accompany depression (Sharpless & Barber, 2011).
A Study on Veterans and Medical Cannabis
A recent study conducted at Avail Cannabis Clinic sought to better understand the potential benefits of medical cannabis among Canadian veterans diagnosed with depression. The study involved 34 veterans, each of whom was assessed before and after beginning treatment with physician-authorized medical cannabis products.
The results were encouraging:
- The average PHQ-9 score, a common measure of depression severity, decreased from 14.6 (moderate to moderately severe) to 10.5 (mild to moderate) following treatment.
- Participants reported an average 42% reduction in pain symptoms.
- There was also a 38% increase in overall activity levels, suggesting improved daily functioning and well-being.
These findings highlight the potential therapeutic role of medical cannabis in supporting mental wellness, particularly for veterans coping with the long-term effects of trauma and chronic pain.
Moving Toward Holistic Wellness for Veterans
While more large-scale research is needed to confirm these outcomes, the preliminary data from Avail Cannabis Clinic adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting that medical cannabis can help improve both mental and physical health outcomes for veterans.
